perennial, bunchgrass; culms branching near base, green, glabrous to strigillose, striate, to 35 cm tall x 0.5 mm dia.; lvs few, flat, glabrous, ca. 1.5 mm wide at base to 6 cm long; ligule none; collar scales 0.5 mm long; sheath open; infl terminal panicles 6-7 cm long; branches 4-6, pilose, each ca. 8 mm long, extending to midway through the distal spikelets; spikelets ca. 1-1.5 cm long including awns; ca. 4 spikelets per branch; glumes membranous, glabrous, keel scabrous, 1st 4.5 mm long with no awn; 2nd 6 mm long with 0.5 mm awn; lowest floret perfect, anthers 2, yellow; 3.5 mm long; stigma yellow plumose; lemma glabrous, 3 awned, lateral awns shorter than central awn, all barbellulate, 6 mm long overall; palea glabrous, midrib excurrent, slightly bifurcate, 6 mm long overall; upper floret pedicellate 0.8 mm, staminate, anthers same as lower floret except 1.5 mm long; upper floret lemma like lower floret lemma; caryopses not seen.
