Description:
rhizomatous perennial, ca. 40 cm tall; alternate branching from central stem; stem striated, tomentose; leaves alternate, sessile, oblanceolate, entire, ciliate, surfaces gland dotted, to ca. 25 mm x 5 mm; inflorescence solitary terminal discoid heads, ca. 2 cm high x 2 cm across; phyllaries imbricate in several series, outermost ovate, hyaline winged above; innermost oblong, topped with white hairs; receptacle convex, chaff of long white flat bristles; disk flowers red-purple; pappus of mixed length, 6-8 mm, antrorsely barbed white bristles
