This var. has been synonymized in a way that put in under P. stansburi but based on observations and pictures received from Bill Gray, and despite having some characters that are inconsistent with either, it should not be included in stansburyi.

Exposed rocky slope in Gambel's oak-Bigtooth maple community
Herbage moderately to densely glandular-hairy throughout; stems densely hairy, corolla tube glandular-hairy but only somewhat exserted, plants low perhaps 2 dm tall
Flower
Late season moisture leading to unusual late season growth and flowering; only a few plants observed in flower; full southern exposure; corolla tubes were not exserted so despite other characters this might be best referred to as simply Phlox longifolia (although perhaps of the late bloom they had not yet fully exserted).
