The smaller tree, undoubtedly planted the same time, died and was cut down in 1991. It began growth ca. 1888, grew rapidly for 20 years and very slowly there after. - M. Nee 1991; Cult. tree in yard, 7 m. tall, 45 cm. dbh, flat topped and growing little, if any, in height in last 20 years. Another, smaller one, nearby. Two others of this species here at one time, probably the same age, but even taller when cut down (seen in old photograph) in first decade of 1900's. Producing abundant cones, but apparently never any viable seeds. Bark of upper branches is bright orange.
