Disturbed fine soil, lake sediments, spoil from canal construction. Prosopis glandulosa the only other plant present. Farther east is dissected alluvium, with veneer of weakly developed desert pavement, and low density Larrea.
Sparse (<3% cover), weak, often sprawling & ragged shrubs, 0.3-1 m tall. But, most com. shrub in habitat. Foliage w/ weak “dead fish” odor. Fls. imperfect, males w/ 5 yellow-green stamens, females w/ feathery stigmas.
